Reading Groups

Reading Groups bring together students, faculty members, practitioners, and researchers from multi-disciplinary backgrounds to think together about topics specific to each reading Group’s theme. They aim to help students deepen their knowledge through in-class discussion, talks by invited speakers, and projects/interventions, guided by relevant readings from literature.

Reading Groups are not credit-bearing. Participation in a Reading Group will take approximately two to three hours per week during Semester. Senior CAPTains who have completed their UTCP can participate in a Reading Group to fulfill residency requirements if they are unable to take a College course.

Family Histories in Global Context

Have you ever wondered about the world your grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles grew up in? This might stretch back as far as the British Empire, World War 2 or some other era-defining event, e.g. the Japanese Occupation of Asia. The 1950-1960s saw the Gender Revolution, Rock and Roll, the Vietnam War, and self-government, merger and separation with Malaya for Singapore – all displayed on the emerging technology of Television. In the 1970s-1990s, Singapore faced the challenges of industrialisation, amidst the Cold War, and the advent of the internet. Join us to explore and share your personal family history (in or out of Singapore!) and investigate the significant events and drivers in global society across two generations from the 1940s-2000s.
