Artist-in- Residence Programme (2013) – Caleb Goh

08 Oct 2013

CAPT was honoured to have Mr Caleb Goh, former drama teacher and professional theatre practitioner, as our Artist-in-Residence for AY2013/2014 Semester 1, in line with the production of CAPT’s first ever musical. Mr Goh mentored CAPTains as they geared up for their performance of Michael Chiang’s ‘Beauty World’.

Mr. Goh graduated with his Bachelor of Arts in Drama from the Queensland University of Technology in Australia, and received his Masters degree in Musical Theatre from San Diego State University. He has worked professionally as an actor, singer, playwright, director and dancer in Singapore as well as in California, in over seventy stage productions, a dozen television series, and four feature films. Not only has he worked with numerous San Diego theatre companies, he has experience with a dozen local theatre companies. These include Theatreworks, Wild Rice, Singapore Repertory Theatre, Toy Factory and The Necessary Stage.

At the time of his attachment to CAPT, Mr Goh was concurrently completing his PhD in Musical Theatre at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and teaching at LASALLE College of the Arts (musical theatre history, writing and research technique and thesis supervision).

In addition to his mentorship of CAPT’s ‘Beauty World’ performers, Mr Goh also conducted a musical theatre workshop and masterclass for other CAPTains. The musical theatre workshop, conducted on 8 October, was a hand-on opportunity to experience the world of musical theatre through actual performance preparation. Participants were brought through basic stage projection technique, acting exercises and improvisations, a short musical theatre dance combination and a quick vocal study of a musical theatre song. After the two-hour workshop, participants had a better understanding of the demands of a musical theatre performer and a greater appreciation of the art form. On 22 October, Mr Goh held his musical theatre masterclass; the class provided participants with individual coaching on the musical theatre number of their choice. Participants delved into the heart of the song, the motivation behind its lyric, the many sections that showcase their voice to the best of its abilities, and the possible movement aspects of the piece. The dynamic masterclass proved to be once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for participants.
