CAPTSLAM’18 Chiang Mai

10 Dec 2018 - 16 Dec 2018

Article written by Xu Ling
In its third run, the CAPT Student Leader Action Mentorship (CAPTSLAM) saw 25 CAPTains mentoring 44 students from Tanglin Secondary School (TSS) as part of the three-month mentorship programme. It concluded with a cultural immersion trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand. The local component, consisting of eight weekly sessions, strives to provide a safe and nurturing space for learning via purposeful action and tailored activities focusing on values and skills. Every session ends with a different sport each week and an overseas planning segment, which the TSS students take ownership of. For the overseas component, the team visited local primary and secondary schools in Chiang Mai where TSS students taught sports, floorball and captain’s ball. Additionally, the TSS students also conducted cultural exchange with the Thai students, under the guidance of CAPTains. This year, to create a more authentic and immersive experience, booths were set up with local snacks and childhood games. To showcase TSS’s niche field in the arts and percussion, the TSS students made instruments out of recycled materials and led the Thai students in learning several percussive beats which cumulated in a percussion performance together. By learning through action in the preparation process, execution of activities and through conducting reflection conscientiously, the mentors instil shared values and foster good habits and practices in the TSS students. Join us in this journey of planting the seed for endless possibilities and growth in the youths!
