Community Engagement Festival (CE Fest) 2017

18 Mar 2017

2017 marks the fourth iteration of CE Fest, CAPT’s annual flagship event that serves as a platform for different communities to mutually engage with and learn from one another. The theme for the year is ‘Milestones’, which represent “not just achievements we look back at and reminisce upon, but also aspirations which we strive towards and that spur us to continually move forward in our life’s endeavours” (Hong Yijun, Project Director).

On 17 March 2017, approximately 150 CAPTains and 190 invited guests across three groups – the elderly, migrants and Junior College students – came to CAPT for a day of shared activities and fun. The individuals who attended the event included: 60 migrants from HOME and HealthServe; 40 seniors from Sun Love (Marsiling); 30 seniors with special needs from Sun Love; and 60 students from Catholic Junior College, Nanyang Junior College, Serangoon Junior College and Saint Andrew’s Junior College.

During the event, participants were divided into small groups that comprised two migrants, 1-2 seniors, 1-2 Junior College students and three CAPTains. Each group then actively participated in a series of activities that were especially crafted with the aim of enabling the different communities to learn about each others’ strengths and weaknesses, in addition to providing a fun environment for individuals to forge relationships in.

For the first activity, CAPTains facilitated a group sharing session where individuals shared about their lives, in depth, with one another. Following, they did several hands-on craft activities where they tried their hand at crafting delicate flower arrangements, bunga mangga and pandan roses together. During lunch, all participants proceeded to CAPT’s dining hall for a sumptuous feast, prepared according to the day’s exciting theme: a Malay wedding! Through a simulation of a Malay wedding, they then learnt about Malay wedding culture, complete with a narration from an educational standpoint. Through the interactions that took part at CE Fest 2017, the different communities gained the opportunity to better understand each other’s points of view and build relationships.
