‘IN CONVERSATION’ with Dr Susan Ang – “Teaching the Young Idea How to Shoot: Children’s Books and the Question of What They Teach”

Dr Susan Ang teaches Literature at the Department of English Language and Literature. She completed her PhD at the University of Cambridge, joined NUS in 1993 and teaches across a wide range of areas from modern poetry to science fiction. Her research interests are in 19th Century Literature, Children’s Literature, Science Fiction and Fantasy, and Crime Fiction, and she has authored books such as “The Master of the Rings: Inside the World of JRR Tolkien”  and “The Widening World of Children’s Literature”.

Dr Ang is well-known for her energy and enthusiasm in helping students learn, for her ability to challenge students to think critically, and to make literature come alive by demonstrating its significance and relevance to everyday life. She was recently awarded the NUS Outstanding Educator Award in 2014, the University’s highest recognition for excellence in teaching, as a testament to her passion and dedication and effectiveness as an educator.
