‘IN CONVERSATION’ with Professor Paul Cheung– “Global Development Goals: How Should We Articulate and Monitor Them?”

05 Sep 2013

Professor Paul Cheung is currently a professor of social policy and analytics at the National University of Singapore.  He joined NUS in 2013 after serving the Director of United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) and the Secretariat of the UN Committee on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) for almost 9 years. He is now senior advisors to the statistical offices in China, Myanmar, Oman, and Abu Dhabi. He is also the Chair of the International Steering Committee on Global Mapping.

In 2015, the world will forge a consensus on a new set of development goals and associated indicators which will replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).  With the MDGs due to expire in 2015, the world is waiting eagerly for a new set of development goals and the monitoring framework. The new global development goals will likely be named ‘Sustainable Development Goals’ (SDGs). In this talk, Prof Cheung addressed some of the issues and discussion points as we look forward to more intense debate on the SDGs as 2015 draws near.
